RF Peter Bourjos, batting ninth, turned out to be the hero as his infield single in the last of the 11th beat the Mets, 5-4. It was the Phillies 10th hit, the first time this season they have reached double figures.
Credit for the win goes to the bullpen of Hector Neris, Dalier Hinojosa and Jeanmar Gomez. Combined they tossed 6.2 scoreless innings and struck out 11. Ten Phillies pitchers worked in the series and this trio are the only ones not to give up a home run.
Freddy Galvis started the Phillies scoring with a two-run homer in the second, his second. He, Carlos Ruiz and Maikel Franco trail Ryan Howard’s four homers for the club lead.
Interesting tweet from the Inquirer/Daily news writer, Matt Gelb: “Last time a Phillies pitcher batted eighth before tonight? Steve Carlton on June 1, 1979.”
Matt was referencing the fact Hellickson was 8th in the order last night.
So, who batted 9th behind Carlton? How about that SS Bud Harrelson.
