Another NY Loss
When the Phillies began the season, the bullpen of Diekman-DeFratus-Giles-Papelbon appeared to be the strongest part of the club, coming off a terrific year. Diekman and DeFratus have been inconsistent and it has cost the Phillies, including yesterday’s 6-3 defeat at the hands of the Mets. Both have great arms and are durable but throwing strikes has been a consistent problem.
Overall, the bullpen has allowed 21 of 41 inherited runners to score. Shut down innings are too infrequent.
New York came into the series riding a three-game losing streak. The Mets continued their mastery of the Phillies, 4-0 at home this season. Going back to last year, they’ve won seven of nine in Citi Field.
Utley (2-for-3, 2 RBI) continued to swing the bat with his fifth multi-hit game since May 16. Over the last 10 games, he’s hitting .406. Howard, over his last 11 games, .409 with nine RBI.
The Baseball Hall of Fame held its annual HOF Classic game of former players on Saturday. If you haven’t been to Cooperstown, put it on your bucket list.
Phillies Alumni were well represented, Aaron Rowand, Jim Eisenreich, Roy Oswalt, Dave Dellucci, Bobby Abreu, Tony Perez and Bobby Dernier.
