Save: Papelbon. Assist: Francoeur.
That’s how the Phillies 3-2 win ended last night. Papelbon is now the Phillies all-time leader in saves thanks to a Francoeur-Ruiz double play. In his 12th big league seasons, Francoeur has 121 assists and 24 double plays as a right fielder.
With the tying run on third base and one out in the ninth, Mercer hit a foul fly ball to right. Francoeur caught it and fired a no-hop strike to Ruiz to nail Lombardozzi and give Papelbon his 113 save with the Phillies. According to Elias Sports Bureau: It was the first of those 113 that ended with an assist from an outfielder. Papelbon had one save for the Red Sox that was secured with a final out on an assist from an outfielder.
So, Jose Mesa is now #2 in saves. He got his 112 in four Phillies seasons (2001-03; 2007). Papelbon’s in his fourth season. Mesa still has the single-season record, 45, in 2002.
Hamels evened his record at 3-3. Since the start of last season, he’s 10-0 when the Phillies score three or more runs while he’s in the game. In 282 career starts, 98-14 under the same circumstances. Stunning.
