Giles Is Fourth

Ken Giles finished fourth in the National League Rookie of the Year voting that was announced on Monday.  Not bad for a guy who began the season at Reading, was promoted to Lehigh Valley before making his major league debut.  He was certainly lights out in the bullpen.  Bodes well for the future as the Phillies enter a rebuilding mode.

Twenty-seven years ago yesterday, Steve Bedrosian became the first Phillies closer to win the Award.  40 saves were tops in the majors, a first for a Phillies reliever.  Set an MLB record with 13 consecutive saves, May 25-June 30. Had a hand in 45 of the Phillies’ 80 wins. “Bedrock” won the Award in the closest balloting ever with 57 points to 55 for Rick Sutcliffe (Cubs) and 54 for Orel Hershiser (Dodgers).
