Law of Averages

If there is such a thing as the law of averages, Cole hasn’t experienced it. Pap did last night.

Pap blew a save back on April 2. He’s been perfect since then (15-15) until the Braves bunched three singles into a game-tying run in the ninth. During his 15 consecutive saves, he had allowed one earned run in 25 innings. The law of averages got Pap.

Cole keeps pitching brilliantly and keeps coming up empty. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last 23.2 innings, has allowed one earned in 29.2 innings this month and is 1-0. So much for the law of averages.

Cole struck out six, increasing his career total to 1,585, moving him into a tie for third place on the club’s all-time list with Chris Short.

Meanwhile, the offense kept sputtering. Howard homered leading off the second inning and that was it through 12 innings. Having scored one run in their last 24 innings, the law of averages entered the picture. With the aid of an error, they scored five in the 13th to win.

From Elias Sports Bureau: It was only the third victory in the Phillies’ 132-year history in which they scored five-or-more runs in an inning after having been blanked over their last 10 innings in the same game. In 1967, they scored six in the 11th inning to beat the Dodgers, 6-0; and in 1916, they scored five runs in the 14th inning in a 6-1 win at Cincinnati, after being blanked since the second inning.

Wearing #40, Aaron Altherr became the 40th player for the Phillies this season.
